How about some free food!    If you're tired of paying way too much for half a crab in a highly average restaurant, why not just go get your own fresh Dungeness crab right out of the ocean? 

From Kamp Klamath, in Klamath, California, it's a beautiful 20 mile drive by the ocean and through the redwoods to Crescent City.  On our way to visit the lighthouse, we saw different groups of people crabbing off the wharf right next to it.   I've never seen it done before and The Gibson family was happy to explain what they were doing.




Fish heads, chicken gone bad, salmon parts.   A recipe for gooood eatin'....








The crab ring is attached to a line of nylon rope that is tied to the railings of the wharf.  Toss the ring with the bait inside like a frisbee so it gets out there a bit....





Every so often, check the ring by pulling it up by the nylon rope as quickly as you can.  The force of the water keeps the crabs in the ring.






He checks the sex of the crab.  If it's a female, you must throw it back.  








Yeah!  Add to the bucket...dinner is going to be great tonight!
