We took a drive today south on Highway One today to Pigeon Point Lighthouse. We stopped at a number of beaches along the way before we came to the lighthouse. The lighthouse is about 24 miles south of Pillar Point RV Point, where we are staying. It is open from 8am to sunset. No charge for walking the grounds. Restrooms available.
The lighthouse
was built

in 1871 to guide ships along the Pacific coast
. At 115 feet tall, it is the tallest lighthouse
(tied with Point Arena Lighthouse) on the West Coast. The lantern room of the tower is equipped with the original first-order, 1000-watt Fesnel lens. The lighthouse was lit for the first time at sunset on November 15, 1872.
The hostel is operated by the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International. The four three-bedroom houses next to the lighthouse have overnight lodging for up to 50 people. Hostel guests share bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms and an outdoor hot tub can be rented in the evenings.
