The months of waiting for commerical crab fishing to be okayed is finally here. Commercial Dungeness crab season was offically opened last Saturday after an okay by the Fish and Game Commission and the wholesale price of $2.99 a pound was agreed upon.  At Pillar Point fishermen are selling right off their boats to customers for about  $6 a pound. This season, 8 fishing boats who catch for Southern Cal Seafood, are bringing in approximately 600 tons of squid a day into Pillar Point Harbor says the Harbor Master.
Each boat can bring in 100 tons of the delicacy.

I took a short walk down to the harbor on Thursday after I saw a number of semi-trucks lined up on the wharf. Turns out crab is so plentiful here, that they are shipping them all over the west coast.   Here's what I saw!

Here's an interesting little tidbit.

What does the iconic Starkist logo "Charlie, The Tuna" have to do with Pillar Point Harbor?   The harbor was the birth place of the talking fish who always got rejected by the StarKist fishermen! "Sorry, Charlie!"

The Romeo wharf was built by Joe Romeo in 1940 for about $50,000.  Fishermen unloaded sardines and salmon there for decades.

Commercial:  November 15, 2014



The daily limit is 10 crab. 


The minimum size limit is 5¾ inches measured by the shortest through the body from edge of shell to edge of shell in front of and excluding the lateral spines.

Pillar Point is a perfect place to go kayaking.   There's quiet waters in the harbor for those just getting started and open ocean for those with more experience who are looking for a challenge.   We've even seen many kayaks filled with fishing gear as they set out around the jetty.
