Birds

WHALES! WHALES!! WHALES!!!

As I always say, "You never know what you'll see when you're at Pillar Point RV Park."  Today was no different....
............

See that black mass out there in the ocean?   It's not an oil slick or even a cloud shadow.
It's a flock of sea birds, as far as the eye can see from one side of Half Moon Bay to the other.  The birds are called Shearwaters.  There are 30 different kinds of shearwaters, and we believe these are sooty shearwaters.   These birds live on the water and come on land only to breed.   They migrate up to 40,000 mil...

An Amazing Squid Season Is Here!

(When the squid are gone, the season is over...)

This season fishing boats right off of Pillar Point are bringing in 110 tons of squid a day!
Squid fishing takes place during the night.  The fishermen shine bright lights into the water and the squid come to the top where they are nabbed in big nets.    We have counted up to 17 boats just off Pillar Point the last several nights. ...
It was one of the more magnificent days here at Pillar Point RV Park today.  The temperature was a balmy 78 degrees with only the slightest cool breeze, which made it perfect for sitting outside and sipping a few of your favorite beverages.

In fact, the ocean itself was so calm, that for the first time since I started coming here, someone was out on the bay water-skiing!...  There were a couple more surprises today...

The pelicans are back but this time, they're after the bait on the harbor side of the jetty.  My friend, Yvonne and I wonder how they survived the dive bombing since the water is so shallow, but it must be those beaks full of water and fish really stop their momentum.

Look how this pelican brings in his wings and becomes a living dart as it enters the water!

The cool thing that happened today is that a fisherman on the shore, tossed out his ...
Devil's Slide Trail To Open
March 2014

The thought of driving Devil's slide used to fill motorists with fear, but now, you'll be able to walk or bike the new Devil's slide trail and see all the amazing views you were too scared to look at while you were behind the wheel!

Devil's Slide was named for the narrow, twisting road that hugged the steep side of the mountain that looms over a never ending view of the ocean...the drop, hundreds of feet to t...
The sadness of how wildlife suffers when we don't take responsibility for our waste was brought home today.

This morning one of our Pillar Point campers noticed a bird sitting on the rocks who had gotten tangled in a personal crab trap.  While professional fisherman use large crab pots that they toss into the ocean, you can catch crab at the end of a fishing pole with a small trap attached to the line.   As a crab goes for t...

It's been 11 days now since the huge bait ball of anchovies came into the bay in front of Pillar Point RV Park and the birds are still feeding as frenzied as they did on the first day the school of fish arrived.

However, at this point, the fish are so plentiful that the Pelicans rarely make their dramatic dives any longer, they just land and stick their heads in the water using the pouches under their bills like a fishing net. &...

You never know what you are going to see out on the pacific ocean when you stay at Pillar Point RV Park.  Nature is always so entertaining.   This morning it appeared that there was a big school of fish right off the beach in front of the park.  I could see the action from the rig and went outside to take some video.  There were pelicans, terns, and all the birds that usually accompany them swarming over the surface of t...

There must have been a school of fish in the bay because the pelicans were having a field day today.      They soar around in circles when they spy fish and will then suddenly dive down into the water and snap up the fish in it's huge bill and pouch, which acts like a fishing net.    Two videos below show you the action.

Pelican Facts:

There are eight species of pelicans in the world, all of which are simil...
