All Posts: pelicans

I have to admit, I didn't get a darn thing done today!  Instead, I spent the day on the jetty watching an entire circus of sea animals in a feeding frenzy...and I was not alone.  The jetty was full of adults and kids all squealing with delight as they saw Surfer's Beach near the jetty teeming with life.    Cars stopped along Highway One, so much so, that police made several announcements on their speakers about moving al...

Holy Moly!...an APB must have been put out Monday, calling all sea lions, sea gulls and Pelicans to Surfer's Beach right in front of Pillar Point RV Park!

Not to mention, a very large research ship...

Like I always say, you never know what you will see when you visit Pillar Point RV Park!

The first thing we noticed in the morning were all the pelicans...then a large ship...then here comes an enormous raft of sea lions...and two lar...

THIS IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT PILLAR POINT RV PARK
Beautiful Weather, Friendly Campers, Gorgeous Sunsets

What a day, what a day, what a wonderful day Sunday was! (except the 49er loss)   Besides being a spectacularly beautiful day...perfect 68 degree temperature, sunny skies and a slight cool breeze, the marine animal kingdom kept us all very entertained.

Fishermen say if you want to know where the fish are, then watch the birds.  ...

An Amazing Squid Season Is Here!

(When the squid are gone, the season is over...)

This season fishing boats right off of Pillar Point are bringing in 110 tons of squid a day!
Squid fishing takes place during the night.  The fishermen shine bright lights into the water and the squid come to the top where they are nabbed in big nets.    We have counted up to 17 boats just off Pillar Point the last several nights. ...

The pelicans are back but this time, they're after the bait on the harbor side of the jetty.  My friend, Yvonne and I wonder how they survived the dive bombing since the water is so shallow, but it must be those beaks full of water and fish really stop their momentum.

Look how this pelican brings in his wings and becomes a living dart as it enters the water!

The cool thing that happened today is that a fisherman on the shore, tossed out his ...

It's been 11 days now since the huge bait ball of anchovies came into the bay in front of Pillar Point RV Park and the birds are still feeding as frenzied as they did on the first day the school of fish arrived.

However, at this point, the fish are so plentiful that the Pelicans rarely make their dramatic dives any longer, they just land and stick their heads in the water using the pouches under their bills like a fishing net. &...

You never know what you are going to see out on the pacific ocean when you stay at Pillar Point RV Park.  Nature is always so entertaining.   This morning it appeared that there was a big school of fish right off the beach in front of the park.  I could see the action from the rig and went outside to take some video.  There were pelicans, terns, and all the birds that usually accompany them swarming over the surface of t...
The bay in front of Pillar Point RV Park came alive today!   A huge school of squid were passing through and that meant not only fishing boats, but hundreds of seagulls, terns and pelicans swarming in the air, diving for their dinner.

You can tell a squid fishing boat here at Pillar Point because they fish at night and shine their brightest lights onto the ocean around them.  That makes the squid come to the surface where the fish...

One of my favorite things to do while at Pillar Point RV Park is to watch the birds....especially the pelicans.    They're big, but agile in the air and amazing fishermen.  You can watch them turn their huge bodies into thin arrows as they plunge into the ocean and emerge with their long beaks and gullets full of fish.

On a recent walk, we had a bit of a wake up call to remind us that pelicans are wild animals and while...
There was a school of something out in the ocean the day before yesterday, because the seagulls were sqawking and the pelicans were circling and diving every few minutes.  It was really quite a sight to see.    Those pelican bodies with the long beaks....they look like a dagger piercing the water and always seem to get the morsels they are looking for.

I watched them from in front of Pillar Point RV Park for a while, and then I took a walk over ...
