All Posts: whales

When we arrived back at Pillar Point at the end of July, I was told that the bay had been full of whales for the past month!   There were so many whales at one time, in fact, people stopped along Hwy 1 to watch.  Even the news crews showed up!

I was so disappointed thinking I missed it all.  However, about a week later, I was sitting at the table in my rig, working on my computer and suddenly I saw a whale, right next t...
I have to admit, I didn't get a darn thing done today!  Instead, I spent the day on the jetty watching an entire circus of sea animals in a feeding frenzy...and I was not alone.  The jetty was full of adults and kids all squealing with delight as they saw Surfer's Beach near the jetty teeming with life.    Cars stopped along Highway One, so much so, that police made several announcements on their speakers about moving al...
WHALES! WHALES!! WHALES!!!

As I always say, "You never know what you'll see when you're at Pillar Point RV Park."  Today was no different....

See that black mass out there in the ocean?   It's not an oil slick or even a cloud shadow.
It's a flock of sea birds, as far as the eye can see from one side of Half Moon Bay to the other.  The birds are called Shearwaters.  There are 30 different kinds of shearwaters, and we believe these are sooty shearwaters.   These birds live on the water and come on land only to breed.   They migrate up to 40,000 mil...

Like I always say, you never know what you will see when you visit Pillar Point RV Park!

The first thing we noticed in the morning were all the pelicans...then a large ship...then here comes an enormous raft of sea lions...and two lar...

Beautiful Weather, Friendly Campers, Gorgeous Sunsets

Fishermen say if you want to know where the fish are, then watch the birds.  ...
Guests at Pillar Point RV Park have been watching the whales as they pass by outside of the harbor breakwater.   For the most part we just see the spouts and lately we've been seeing them almost every day.   At the same time, dolphins have been coming up close in the bay on a regular basis.    The weather has been warm and the ocean smooth, so it's been easier to see them all.  Here's a quick video I took ...

Another perfect day in paradise!  Blue skies, light breeze, not too hot, not too cold.

"Grey Whale Cove" is just north of Pillar Point RV Park on Highway One.   There is limited parking but the beach is worth following the path down to the ocean.   I was standing high on a bluff overlooking the beach when I took this photo.   Those ant-like things on the beach are people!   ...
