A funny thing happened on our way to get a burger...

We passed by the
Rock and Roll Diner in
Oceano, California several times and were intrigued by seeing that the restaurant was inside two railroad cars. It's decorated in the stereotypical 50's imagination with a black and white checked floor and cute red and white vinyl seats. On a Friday night, we thought it might be a great place to grab a burger, so we drove just a quick mile or so on Highway 1 from where we were staying at
Pismo Coast Village in Pismo Beach. While they had every kind of b

urger you could possibly want and all kinds of BBQ, what we weren't expecting was to find the most amazing Greek menu, along with the best Clam Chowder and Crab Bisque we've ever tasted...and I don't even like crab! Look at Hamilton with that grin on his face...I think he would have taken a bath in that chowder if he could.
We met the own

er,
Marios Pouyioukkas, who explained that the Greek dishes on the menu were his moms. She would come over from Cypress during the summer and her cooking would be a special of the day. Customers would love it so much, that the item would make it on the regular menu...and so it went until the selection rivals the size of the BBQ, Mexican and Burger menus. As for the secret for his clam chowder, Marios says it's lots of clams....the family at the next table piped in and said "it's the bacon!" These folks drove over and hour to have this clam chowder.
We shared
Pastitsio and Shrimp
Soulvaki both served with a wonderful Greek Salad, a delicious rice and home made pita bread... Usually when I think of Pita bread, I think cardboardy, but this pita bread was served warm, soft, slightly raised with a touch of olive oil and garlic...it made my eyes roll back in my head.

The diner is also known for their fantastic, old fashioned shakes, topped with whipped cream and a cherry.
