While there is something magical about being deep in the redwoods for long periods of time, you do need to enter the real world once in a while to get supplies.    Around Klamath, there are a number of lodges where you can get a good meal, and there's the gas station mart where you can pick up a quart of milk or bread, but if you actually want to get hamburger, veggies or fresh fruit, you need to make the 20 mile trip to Crescent City where they have a real grocery store and a Walmart.

Sometimes we make the 40 mile trip all the way to Brookings, Oregon actually...another beautiful city along the ocean on Highway 101.    They have a Fred Myer's store there that is crazy big that has not only a grocery store with fabulous produce, but it also contains an electronics store, a furniture store, a patio store, a kitchen store, a clothing store, a toy store and an entire jewelry store in one place.   I had to call Hamilton, waiting in the car, to come in quick and rescue me otherwise I would never come out!  (There's also a great Dairy Queen there called "Chill and Grill")

ANYWAY...Once you leave Klamath, there are no other towns.  I thought you might like to see some photos I took on our trip to the grocery store...

We head down Beach Road two miles to Highway 101

We pass the people watching the gray whales, Lucy and her calf, Little Ricky swimming in the Klamath River...

We head north on Highway 101...

Then we head west a little and east a little and so on....lol

I think of my brothers, Scott and Craig back in Minnesota, who are big motorcycle enthusiasts and how they would love this drive

Today it's foggy at the ocean...but it is so beautiful.   This is early morning, but the fog burns off by the afternoon.

I had to stop and take a photo of Hamilton standing next to this redwood tree...

Another beach with black sand.  You can see the Highway 101 bridge to the right as it disappears back into the redwoods...

I just thought this piece of driftwood was
so interesting...

Here's that same beach with my back to the bridge this time....  See the mom and her son on the left?

When this scene first comes into view, you catch a glimpse of it through an opening in the redwoods.  Simply breathtaking...every time!

I almost forgot to tell you that 8 of those 20 miles are a daylight headlight zone because the redwoods are so dense and so right there, it gets dark in the groves!  You must put the Highway 101 drive north from Arcata to Oregon on your must see things to do.    And if you need a place to stay RVer's/Campers, I recommend Kamp Klamath, of course!

  1. Rose Hamilton wow wow wow! cant believe how big that redwood is!!
