What a place to relax and kick back, or to use as a hub to explore the Redwoods.  Either way, the Benbow RV Resort is a first class place to stay.

In the slideshow below, I wanted to show you the beauty of the Benbow RV Resort and then we follow a lovely path, under a bridge to the historic Benbow Inn where you can get a wonderful meal.  There's a patio of tables with white linens and fine wines, or you can dine inside.

Here's the thing: When you're located on one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in the world, you're used to only the best king salmon...and when you have the best king salmon, prep it in an all-natural brine  and cold smoke it over red alder, you get the best smoked king salmon.

I was sitting with Mary on Friday when she was preparing Doug's latest batch of smoked salmon  for the Farmer's Market in Crescent City.

A Day in Fort Bragg, California

We are at Pomo RV Park in Fort Bragg, California, located along the Pacific Ocean on the incredible Highway 1.   (Fort Bragg is on one of the few stretches of Highway One up here that is straight, so enjoy it while you can!)    We arrived late afternoon and were immediately impressed by the park-like setting with lots of open space, trees, grass, flowers and bushes.  Each deep, wide space i...
Lucy Dies

Lucy was headed toward the ocean yesterday and we were thrilled that she was going in the right direction, but her timing wasn't the best.   While the river was full and vibrant when she entered to raise her calf, after six weeks, the river has become more shallow, exposing the riverbeds and surprise sandbars mid river.

So it is with a sad heart that I have to report that during the night, Lucy got caught on one of thos...
Baby Gray returns to ocean.   Mom still in the river.

After two days of swimming further and further away from his mother, the baby gray whale
has split from his mother completely and has made his way back to the ocean.  In the meantime, mom continues to swim circles right under the Golden Bear Bridge on Hwy 101 in Klamath, California.

Authorities are starting to worry because the mother seems to be moving up river which becom...
The mother California Grey Whale and her calf  (Lucy and Little Ricky) are still here in the Klamath River.   They are hanging out closer and closer to the shore, delighting people who are now coming from neighboring cities all over to see them.   It appears, however, that the whales are having as much fun watching us as we are watching them.    You'll see in one part of this new video that Lucy comes clos...

The momma and baby gray whales, Lucy and Little Ricky, are still having a grand old time in the Klamath River, in Northern California, just down the road from where we are staying in Kamp Klamath.    The two have been in the same spot in the river since June 27th.

This photo was taken by fellow whale watcher, Ashley Donnell.   You can see  the mother rolling about and there's the baby beside her still underwater...&n...
While there is something magical about being deep in the redwoods for long periods of time, you do need to enter the real world once in a while to get supplies.    Around Klamath, there are a number of lodges where you can get a good meal, and there's the gas station mart where you can pick up a quart of milk or bread, but if you actually want to get hamburger, veggies or fresh fruit, you need to make the 20 mile trip to Crescent ...
I'll let you in on a big secret...  One of the new delicacies we've learned about eating Salmon is the back!   Once the filets have been taken off, you're left with the skeleton remains of the fish, but among that structure is some of the most amazing bits of salmon you'll ever taste!

Here is a photo of Professional Fishing Guide, Steve Huber, and his son, Jordon.    Jordon, 13, caught this 26 pounder Tuesday on a ba...
Every Saturday night is always "good eatin' night" while we are here at Kamp Klamath, our home for a month or so, along the mouth of the Klamath River in northern California.

Saturdays are all you can eat BBQ salmon night and the campers as well as local folks from around the area come together to celebrate the days' catch.  We all sit by the bonfire, eat and listen to entertainer extrodinaire, Douglas King sing, play guit...
