Aaron Weiss has a great article in WI-Fi planet on boosting your 3G broadband internet access in fringe areas of  Verizon, Sprint, and Alltel who all use the EVDO technology. Aaron has many suggestions on boosting your access and speed but of particular interest is his success with a Wi-Fi antenna..unconventional to say the least...
